The England and Wales Cricket Board has named Durham's Ben Stokes captain of the England men's test team. He takes over as the 81st captain of the England Men's Test team, succeeding Joe Root. The appointment was accepted by the ECB Interim Chair and Chief Executive Officer on Tuesday evening, following the proposal of England Men's Cricket Managing Director, Rob Key, the ECB stated in a statement.

Stokes, who made his Test debut in December 2013, has played 79 Tests for England so far. In February 2017, he was chosen vice-captain, and he also took over as skipper when Root was away for the birth of his second child in the summer of 2020.
"I am honoured to be given the chance to lead the England Test team," said the newly appointed captain, Stokes. "This is a real privilege, and I'm excited about getting started this summer."

Durham's all-rounder has 5061 Test runs at an average of 35.89 and 174 wickets to his name. After being named captain, Stokes expressed his excitement, saying he was "honoured" and thanking former captain Root for his role in his development as a leader.
