International Cricket: Joe Root resigns as England Test skipper - On Friday, April 15, 2022 Joe Root stepped down from Test captaincy, the English Cricket Board confirmed it while giving a statement. Root started leading the English side back in 2017 and stepped down after losing the Ashes to the Australian side 4-0. He led the Test side in most number of matches (64) and recorded the most number of wins in the format during his tenure (27) as England captain - For more IPL and Cricket news follow 99Runs


Under Root’s captaincy, England have won a test series 4-1 at their home against India in 2018 and registered a 3-1 away test series in South Africa in 2020. In 2018, Root also became the first England men's captain to win a Test series in Sri Lanka since 2001, a feat he went on to repeat with a 2-0 victory in 2021.

Joe stepped down from Test captaincy after his 14 month tenure when they faced a humiliating 4-0 defeat in the Ashes, multiple Test defeats from India, home and away. And not able to take his team to the World Test Championship final. Recently, under his leadership, the team also lost a three match away test series 0-1 against West Indies.

"After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England Men's Test Captain," Root said. "It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right."





"I am immensely proud to have captained my country and will look back on the past five years with enormous pride. It has been an honour to have done the job and to have been a custodian of what is the pinnacle of English cricket.

"I have loved leading my country, but recently it's hit home how much of a toll it has taken on me and the impact it has had on me away from the game.


"I want to take this opportunity to thank my family, Carrie, Alfred and Bella, who have lived it all with me and been incredible pillars of love and support throughout. All of the players, coaches and support staff that have helped me during my tenure. It has been a great privilege to have been with them on this journey.

Joe Root is currently England’s second highest run scorer in Tests, behind Alastair Cook. He has 14 centuries under his belt in the Test skipper. His tally of 5295 runs as skipper is the highest by any England captain and puts him fifth in the all-time list behind Graeme Smith, Alan Border, Ricky Ponting and Virat Kohli.

"He has led by example, and that has resulted in more Test wins than any other England captain, alongside a number of famous series home and away victories.
