Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, could have been selected, but he was not interested. Key is hoping to combine his IPL duties with his work as England's white-ball coach. Mahela Jayawardene, the former captain of Sri Lanka, has also ruled himself out of contention for the post.

According to Sportsmail, Ottis Gibson has emerged as a coach candidate, with Robert Key planning to split red-ball and white-ball duties.

Gibson, 53, has already coached two international teams, his native West Indies and South Africa, and was bowling coach of Bangladesh's team for two years until January.

He previously worked as the English team's bowling coach on two occasions. He did the job for the first time from 2007 and 2010.

Importantly, during his second tenure as England's fast-bowling coach between 2015 and 2017, he developed a strong connection with several of the team's senior players, having previously worked with them.

Ponting was named the Head Coach of the Delhi Capitals of the Indian Premier League in January 2018. The Delhi Capitals finished last in the 2018 Indian Premier League season. Ponting has aided the development of young players like Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant by fostering a fresh team spirit. In the 2019 season, the Delhi Capitals finished third, a substantial improvement over the previous season.

Rob Key, the new Director of England Cricket, is expecting an improvement in English with the addition of Ricky Ponting, but the 47-year-old former Australian captain isn’t interested in that offer.
