It's been over a year and a half since Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were racially abused by supporters during the Sydney Test, but the memories - and scars - are still fresh.

"We insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground," Ajinkya Rahane, India's captain at the time in the absence of Virat Kohli, recalls informing the umpires, while R Ashwin says Siraj showed bravery in bringing the issue to the public's attention.

The Indian players informed the match officials about the abuse they had received after the third day of play in the New Year's Day Test, and when it resumed the next morning, the Indians informed the umpires.

Before the game could resume, the play was halted for ten minutes and a group of spectators were ejected from the stands.

According to Rahane, the umpires, Paul Reiffel and Paul Wilson, instructed the players to retire to the dressing room if they didn't want to play, but India insisted on dismissing the supporters and finishing the Test.

"I informed the umpires that [they] needed to take action and that we wouldn't play until then," Rahane recalled on the sidelines of an event in Mumbai on Wednesday to premiere Bandon Mein Tha Dum, a documentary about the series, which India won 2-1 in dramatic circumstances.

"You can't stall the game, but you can walk out if you wish," according to the umpires.

We insisted on getting the abusers out of the ground and stated that we were here to play, not sit in the dressing room.

"Adelaide and Melbourne, in my opinion, were not as horrible. But this has been going on in Sydney for a long time.

It's something I've also gone through. They have a bad habit of getting nasty "After a magnificent performance with the bat in the company of Hanuma Vihari, Ashwin stated that he wanted to assist India to draw that Test.

"Yes, it happened a lot more at that ground [SCG] and that place [Australia]."

But it was brave of him [Siraj] to bring it up, so that at least a larger group of people are aware of it, and those sitting close to such persons in the ground do better next time.

"It's something that has to be condemned." But I'd like to point out that people are separating individuals on various grounds all over the place, which is not acceptable."
