International Cricket: Nicholas Pooran named as West Indies limited overs skipper

International Cricket: Nicholas Pooran, an emerging wicketkeeper batsman from Trinidad (country in the Caribbean) born on October 2, 1995 has been one of the most aggressive as well as the young West Indian batsman. The journey of the boy started from the year 2012 when he was only 16, played for Naparima College in San Fernando where he made a debut for the U-19 team. His talents made him selected for the 2014 U-19 World Cup team and was allotted the position of vice-captain, his performance was so mesmerizing that he scored 303 runs from 6 games and was ranked as number 4 in the view of top run scorers in the world cup. He carried his gameplay in the debut match against Guyana Amazon Warriors where he smashed 54 runs off 24 balls and therefore he was seen as the calm and cool player.

The journey of International debut started in the year 2016 in the form of T20, where his performance was not that good. He came as a shining star in the year 2018 and 2019 where he scored two half centuries in the small period of time against India and England. In the year 2019 he was selected for the 2019 ICC World Cup where made 367 runs in nine matches and also came up with a first century against the Sri Lankan cricket team.



His Indian Premier League career started in the year 2017 where he was sold for INR 30 Lakhs to Mumbai Indians but he didn’t come up with his performance which made him remain unsold on the 2018 IPL auction even after setting the base price of INR 50 Lakhs. His journey continued in December 2018 when he was purchased by the team Punjab Kings for the 2019 IPL. He continued playing and made an excellent score in the IPL 2020 where he made 353 runs in 14 matches and also became the 4th highest six hitter with altogether of 25 sixes. Currently he is playing for the Sunrisers Hyderabad bought for INR 10.75 Cr.

Since Kieron Pollard has announced his retirement from International Cricket he gave the charge to Nicholas Pooran who used to lead the team in his absence. His appointment has now been confirmed by the Cricket West Indies (CWI). Pooran in one of his speeches mentioned that the captaincy won’t be new for him as he led the team in Pollard’s absence, he also mentioned that he would be honoured to be the captain of the West Indies team following the measures taken by the formers of the team. He will be leading the team in the three matches away against Netherlands becoming a part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super league.


The struggle and hardships faced by Nicholas Pooran on his journey has now become one of the inspirational stories for all the youngsters starting from a school cricket player to the captain of one the best International Cricket team. His mesmerizing hard work and patience had brought him to the position he deserved.
