International Cricket: Joe Root has a serious chance of breaking Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record for most Test runs while still only 31 years old - For more IPL and Best Cricket news follow 99Runs

He reached his 26th Test century and became only the 14th player to score 10,000 runs in Test cricket when he nicked Tim Southee for a couple in the 77th over of England's chase at Lord's.

Only nine other players have hit 10,000 runs in fewer at-bats than he did in 218. The fastest innings are 195, three less than Steve Waugh's 244 innings.

The fact that he created his debut early - once he was a few of weeks wanting his twenty-secondly second birthday - plus the number of looks at cricket England play, implies that whereas others have reached the landmark in fewer innings, Root is the fastest to 10,000 runs in terms of your time, and is that the joint-youngest too. Alastair Cook, the sole alternative Englishman on the list, was conjointly thirty-one years and 157 days recent once he reached the mark (though in terms of days, he was at some point.

Root's trip to the milestone has been fraught with ups and downs, as is to be expected in a Test career that spans over a decade. After 64 Tests, he averaged 52.45 during the first five years of his career. After that, his average declined to 39.70 for the next three years, as was to be expected.

During that time, he only scored four hundred in 33 Tests; in fact, 2020 is the only calendar year in which he hasn't scored a century despite playing multiple Tests.

However, the floodgates have opened again since 2021, with 2192 runs at 56.20 in the last 21 Tests.

This, despite the Ashes series in 2021-22, in which he only averaged 32.20 in 10 innings.

Even more astonishing is his pace of hundreds: nine in 21 matches, or once per 2.3 Tests, compared to his lifetime average of one every 4.5.

Joe Root Journey to 10,000 runs

Root's additive average once a look brings out these ebbs and flows in his career. Leave aside the turbulence of his 1st twenty Tests, and his highest average was fifty-seven. 1 1 once his twenty-fourth to take a look at, in April 2015. In regarding four-and-a-half years, it had swayback by nearly ten runs, to 47.35 once his 87th take a look at, against New Zealand in November 2019. The great news for his fans is that since then, I have been stepping in the correct direction: the career average currently stands at forty-nine. 57. If he gets in each inning within the next take a look at, he must score 185 runs for his average to the touch fifty once more.

Root is also the current Fab Four's first player to reach 10,000 runs.

As previously said, this is a product of the number of Tests England plays: while making his debut a few years before Root, Kane Williamson only played 87 Tests.

England has played 120 Tests since Root's debut, compared to 79 for New Zealand and 95 each for India and Australia.

The Famous Four Smith Williamson Kohli & Root

Root has the lowest average of the four (though he is fast catching up with Kohli).

Root's international average of 46.47 is second only to Steven Smith's 57.06 among these four.

When playing away from home, both Williamson (43.76) and Kohli (42.81) had a worse record.

Root's home numbers, on the other hand, pale in comparison to the other three: he averages 52.93, while the other three all average higher than 60.

Root is currently 14th in the overall Test aggregate with 10,015 runs, although he is first among active players.

Given Root's average of around 1000 runs each year, the distance between him and Sachin Tendulkar is 5906 runs, or roughly six years of Test cricket.

Given Root's current form and the fact that he has recently been relieved of the captaincy, it's entirely possible that he will challenge Tendulkar's record in the coming years.
